Founded in 1853 by the Schongauer Society, the Unterlinden Museum is one of the must-visit museums in Alsace. Located in Colmar, it offers a journey through nearly 7,000 years of art history, from Prehistory to contemporary creation, along a path where heritage and modernity harmoniously interact. 

Its rich collections are displayed within an exceptional architectural ensemble: a 13th-century Dominican convent, the former municipal baths (1906), and a contemporary extension designed by Herzog & De Meuron (2015). 

The museum houses major masterpieces, including the famous Isenheim Altarpiece by Matthias Grünewald and Nicolas of Haguenau, as well as significant collections of ancient, modern, and contemporary art.

The Village of Hansi and his Museum is located in front of the famous "Maison des Têtes". Come in and discover the city of Colmar in the lifetime of the famous artist Jean-Jacques Waltz, so called "Hansi". Find out about the fascinating World of Hansi in our Museum on the first floor. Nowadays as a part of the alsatian cultural heritage, his original artworks will allow you to dive into the romantic and fascinating Alsace that he experienced.

During your visit, you will witness Hansi's multifarious life and activities: His artistic development from his childhood on, over his time of exile, passing by his beautiful aquarelles and publicity signs to hand-painted tableware and clothes. Furthermore, a lot of exciting and interactive installations can be discovered by old and young.

The Bartholdi Museum in Colmar is presenting a unique photographic exhibition marking two major anniversaries: the 140th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty and the 200th anniversary of the invention of photography.

The exhibition, Objective Liberty!, explores the concept of freedom through a series of photographs taken by Patrick Bailly-Maître-Grand during the restoration of the Statue of Liberty in New York in 1985. In dialogue with these images, pupils from Molière Secondary School in Colmar offer their own perspective on this universal value, creating a bridge between Bartholdi’s legacy and the reflections of younger generations.

Two Anniversaries

It was in France that Nicéphore Niépce produced the first permanent photograph in history, dating from 1826 and marking the invention of photography.

One hundred and forty years ago, on 28 October 1886, the Statue of Liberty was officially inaugurated in New York Harbour, United States.

These anniversaries also coincide with the addition to the museum’s collections of four modern daguerreotypes created by Patrick Bailly-Maître-Grand from views taken during the restoration of the Statue of Liberty in 1985.

The artist, born in 1945 and living and working in Strasbourg, donated these photographs to the museum in 2025. They complement a collection of silver gelatin prints from the same series, acquired by the City of Colmar at the time of the Statue’s centenary.

The exhibition presents the artist’s Statue of Liberty series, the photographic techniques employed, and the context in which the work was produced.

The exhibition has been awarded the “Bicentenary of Photography” label by the French Ministry of Culture.

Educational Project

The museum will also present a dialogue between the works of Patrick Bailly-Maître-Grand and photographs produced by pupils from the Year 9 photography specialisation class at Molière Secondary School in Colmar, centred on the theme of freedom.

The pupils were guided by Colmar-based photographers Vanessa and Vijay Moselle, who led the photographic sessions and supervised the image-processing work.

The exhibition opening will take place on Wednesday 1 July at 6.00 pm and will place particular emphasis on the work produced by the pupils.

For the exhibition *Traverser l’horizon*, the Villa Tschaen is completely transformed into an indoor landscape to be explored. Conceived as an immersive experience, the venue has been entirely redesigned to accommodate light installations, suspended veils, projections and colourful compositions within a contemplative environment where perception, light and the senses interact.

Jordan Tran is an artist from Mulhouse who began his career by exhibiting at Villa Tschaen in 2018 and now exhibits in numerous galleries around the world: Miami, Brussels, London, Tokyo… His abstract landscapes impress with the perfection of their colour gradients. Presented in a vast range of colours, they immerse us in different atmospheres each time.

The return of Jordan Tran / Kean to the Villa Tschaen is a particularly significant event.

This first immersive exhibition bears witness to the journey he has undertaken since his debut at the gallery, but also to the loyal and long-standing relationship that has united the artist with the Villa Tschaen for over eight years. It is a way of celebrating an artistic career that has now gone global, whilst returning to where it all began.
